YEMAYA – WOMEN IN SCIENCE – WATER AND MINING
Ms. Rose Tomno, a PhD Chemistry student in the Department of Physical Sciences, Machakos University is undertaking a six month PhD traineeship program at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology in Germany under TUBAF- ERASMUS + project in which Machakos University is one of the collaborating partners. The partnership, through the YEMAYA project, seeks to build capacity for excellence in research, train on professional skills, build capacity for women leadership in science and promote practical applications of science-based outcomes in addition to equipping women with soft and competency skills with the aim of achieving sustainable development goal 5.
During the research stay, Ms. Tomno will focus on development of environmental sensors for monitoring heavy metals and organic pollutants in water and remediation. Sensing materials, synthesis and characterization of sensing materials, fabrication of the sensing material on electrodes and electrochemical analysis techniques are some of the learning areas. In addition she will participate in workshops, discussions and presentations on waste management and disposal techniques, water remediation and cleaner energy all geared towards achieving clean environment.
Ms. Tomno is together with other seven female students from Ghana and Nigeria. The Department of Physical Sciences wishes Ms. Tomno an enriching research stay in Germany.
