BSc Analytical Chemistry
Machakos University Alumni
Almost a year ago, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Analytical chemistry in Machakos University. Reflecting on the past can be a comforting and enriching experience, providing a sense of continuity and identity. It can also be a way to share meaningful stories and life lessons with others. I cannot help but reflect on the final moments of that phase in my life and a trait that has stayed with me to date: determination, and the zest to succeed.
I clearly recall our undergraduate project that focused on Optimization of Bioethanol Production from Apple Pomace by Computational-Aided Simulation. The project had both theoretical aspect involving simulation of pretreatment conditions to achieve optimal conditions and experimental aspect involving application of the optimized conditions for the conversion of waste cellulose to ethanol. I remember collecting data during the peak hours of the day and happily answering questions from curious students as well as lengthy discussions with the supervisors. We did our best to achieve the objectives of the project. It wasn’t easy, but with resilience and grit, we faced every challenge and pushed forward until the work was done. The experience of leading a team to design an academic project in my final is one of a life time. Taking on the role of team leader felt daunting at first, but I had the most cooperative teammates one could ask for. Together, we invested countless hours into the project experiencing both the pains and joys of hard work. Those sleepless nights spent researching and refining our work paid off when we finally stood before a panel to present the project results.
I have fond memories of the four years I pursued BSc in Analytical Chemistry degree, all which can be attributed to good planning and discipline. I remember the immense support and encouragement from my family to keep going. I remember my friends, the joy we shared, and the burdens we helped each other carry. Lastly, I will not forget the quiet moments I spent with GOD. While some memories fade into the background, one character trait remains outstanding in me: tenacity and the drive to succeed! Without determination, I would not have successfully led my team through that intense research project. I would not have efficiently completed the practical aspect of my project. I wouldn’t have achieved anything I did, which is another testimony in itself. Looking back at my achievements, completing the research project and producing a report, graduating with a first-class honors, and discovering my passion for research, I can confidently say it was all worth it.
This reflection has reminded me to keep striving for excellence and setting ambitious goals. To anyone reading this, I encourage you to pursue your dreams with determination, because the results are truly rewarding.
I am deeply grateful to everyone who made my time at Machakos University meaningful and thank you for reading! Also, feel free to share what your final-year experience was like.
